Muddy Waters plugged his red Telecaster into a cranked Super Reverb in the mid-1970s. The gain, dynamics and tone came from the amp, not from floor pedals.

Charles Shaar Murray describes Waters' preferred rig at the October 1976 Hard Again sessions as the red Telecaster plugged into his Super Reverb, with the amplifier controls at 9 and its reverb off. Waters chose not to play guitar on that album, so this entry does not attribute the setup to those recorded guitar tracks. Bob Margolin, who played beside Waters from 1973 to 1980, independently recalls a mid-1970s European performance in which Waters used the full dynamic range of his cranked amplifier, moving from a breath to a roar. Together the sources establish a period direct guitar-and-amplifier core; they do not prove that no intermediary was ever used at every show, so the scope is deliberately limited to this documented era and path.

MethodologyQuestions about Muddy Waters's 1975 guitar rig
- Did Muddy Waters use effects pedals in 1975?
- No effects pedals are documented in this path. The archive records the guitar going straight into the amplifier, so the sound comes from the instrument, the amp and the player's hands.
- When and where was this guitar rig used?
- Mid-1970s. This is the core signal path documented for that period, not a career-wide gear list.
- How does the archive know what was on this guitar rig?
- 2 cited sources, listed above with the date each was read, including Classic Rock / Louder, Bob Margolin. Among them a written article and an archive record. The units are recorded as documented equipment, and the page was last audited on 2026-07-18.
