The early brown-sound chain used no distortion pedal: a large flanger and orange phaser fed an Echoplex before the Marshall.

Van Halen described the core order as flanger, Phase 90 and Echoplex into the amplifier. Period boards also carried EQ and switching utilities, which are excluded because their precise role changed between setups.
